Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel (strength) and resistance to corrosion are required, often when a brushed metal finish is desired. The 2 primary types found in Architectural applications are type 304 and type 316.
Type 304: When more than 10% Chromium is added to ordinary steel it becomes Type 304 (also known as 18-8) stainless steel. This is the most widely used type and is therefore available in the largest variety of shapes.
Type 316: When 2-3% molybdenum is added to Type 304 we create Type 316. They are sometimes referred to as the marine grades of stainless steel since they are so widely used for boat deck railing sand cable fittings. This type of stainless has superior corrosion resistance to Type 304, this comes at a higher cost but is the best choice in coastal areas.
Stainless steel has a high scrap value and can be recycled to produce new stainless without any loss of quality making it one of the greenest materials available. Most products containing stainless steel today are made using a significant percentage of scrap.
